Choosing a Naturtint Permanent Shade

When using Natural (N) shades, if you tend to go too red, golden, brassy, or yellow then blend in an Ash color. For example, with 6N, 7N, 8N use 8A or with 9N or 10N, use 10A. To tone down Mahogany (4M, 5M and 7M) colors, or if you are using these shades on grey hair, mix with similar number of a Natural color. To mellow Coppers (5C, 7C and 8C) or if you are using these shades on grey hair, mix with similar number of a natural color. Please keep in mind that your final color results will depend on the current color, thickness and overall condition of your hair.

Natural (N): These shades are ideal for keeping your natural tone.
Pro-tip: N is best for covering gray hair and giving a natural-looking result. Since gray hairs have lost their natural pigment, they soak up dyes more steadily. That means that brighter colors and reds won’t always look natural. If you prefer warm or red tones, mixing with the Natural (N) will give your hair a more uniform result.

Golden (G): Since they have more yellow and some orange pigments, these tones add warmth to your hair.

Ash: Ash tones add coolness to your hair. To counteract brassiness, choose from this line(best when mixed with N tone).

Copper (C): With primarily orange pigments, these are vibrant shades.

Mahogany (M & I): For more purple and red pigments, use this line to get a red-violet tint.

Red (R): To achieve a red hue, pick from these red-pigmented shades.

Chocolate: Add warmth with these deep brown colors.

Darkening/Lightening: You can go as dark as you like in one treatment, but with Naturtint, you can only lighten by one or two shades; more than that can often create unwanted brassy tones.

Covering Grey - Very resistant grey will require 40 minutes development time and the 'Natural' colors are usually the most suitable. Brighter tones such as the Mahogany and Copper tones should be mixed with a Natural tone if applied to grey or white hair. Lighter tones can look more flattering against our skin tone as we age, so don't be afraid to go a shade lighter than your natural color once was.

Blends - You can mix any of Naturtint 32 colors. Most people find that coloring one or two shades darker or lighter than their natural color suits their skin tone well.

Naturtint can be used to create an endless number of styles and looks, all from the comfort of your own home! The “Shadow Color Technique” and “Graduation Color” tutorial videos below demonstrate just two of the looks that can be achieved by blending colors and shades!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Naturtint?
With its low-chemical content, Naturtint is kinder to your hair and skin over traditional coloring products. Its plant-enriched formula helps maximize shine and color for up to 5 weeks. And it provides excellent gray coverage, too!
When you choose Naturtint, you're getting a product that's free from ammonia, parabens, silicones, paraffin, mineral oils, heavy metals, artificial fragrances, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), formaldehyde derivatives, and more! How “natural” is Naturtint Permanent Hair Color?
With its low-chemical content, Naturtint is kinder to your hair and skin over traditional coloring products. Naturtint is enriched with plant and seed oil-derived ingredients, selected for their beneficial properties to the hair and scalp. Since it is a permanent dye, it does contain some chemical Ingredients in order to color your hair.

How does the color code work?
Each Naturtint hair color uses a code made up of a number and a letter according to the salon industry standard system. The number refers to shade level, darkest being 1 and lightest being 10 (see left), and the letter represents color category:

N-Natural tones provide a neutral tone (neither warm nor cool) and are best for covering gray.
G-Golden tones provide a subtle warmth.
A-Ash tones add coolness and work well for counteracting brassiness when mixed with an N tone.
C-Copper tones are vibrant, rich and are more orange in color.
M-Mahogany tones have both purple and red added for a red-violet color.
R-Predominantly red in color.

Is Naturtint vegan friendly and cruelty-free?
Yes! Naturtint is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Phergal, the manufacturer, does not test products on animals.

Is Naturtint gluten-free?
Naturtint hair color contains a hydrolyzed wheat protein. But all gluten is removed through a distillation process. To make sure Naturtint is right for you, do the strand and sensitivity tests before use.

Does Naturtint contain any heavy metals?
No worries here! Their manufacturer test to ensure is free of heavy metals. Then, Naturtint USA verifies those tests again for the U.S. market.

Can Naturtint cause hair loss?
Naturtint products are not known to cause hair loss. However, if you are experiencing hair loss, we recommend consulting a medical professional. Common reasons for losing hair include genetics, hormones, stress, certain diseases, vitamin/protein deficiencies, medications, etc. Pulling or being rough on your hair can cause hair loss or breakage.

Will one kit be enough for long hair?
One kit typically contains enough product to color shoulder-length hair. If your hair is longer than that, you may want to buy two or more kits.

Can I expect the final color to match the picture on the box?
Your hair is unique to you. Everyone will have their own individual results depending on starting color, hair quality, and/or texture, and we can't guarantee it will look exactly like the image on the box. Since your hair and body chemistry are continually changing, the only way to predict your final color precisely is to do a strand test right before coloring.

What are PPDs?
PPD (p-phenylenediamine) is found in most permanent hair colors as a color pigment. As a known skin sensitizer, certain individuals can develop allergies to PPD. Naturtint Permanent Hair Color contains minimum levels of PPD. If you are allergic to PPD, do not use Naturtint Permanent Hair Color.

Can Naturtint be used if I have suffered severe allergic reactions to other hair color in the past?
Any cosmetic can trigger an allergic reaction, even if you've used it frequently before. The sensitivity test can help you determine if you're sensitive to Naturtint. Like other permanent hair color products, Naturtint contains ingredients that could cause allergic reactions for certain individuals. Take a preliminary sensitivity test 48 hours before treatment to decide if it's right for you.
If you do have an allergic reaction to the sensitivity test, do not use the product. Consult a medical professional about your allergy symptoms.

How long does it take to color my hair with Naturtint Permanent Hair Color?
It takes 20-40 minutes once the color has been applied. For good gray hair coverage, leave the color on for the full 40 minutes.

What are the color strand and sensitivity tests for?
Before each use, we strongly recommend doing both tests (instructions are found on the packaging insert). The color strand test will help you predict the final color you can expect after the treatment. This test is especially helpful if you're a new Naturtint customer or if you are significantly changing your color.

Can I mix Naturtint colors to get the shade I want?
Yes! You can mix any of Naturtint's 32 colors. Most people find that coloring one or two shades darker or lighter than their natural color suits their skin tone well. For personalized help mixing colors, please contact a Naturtint Color Specialists. They are happy to give you customized guidance for your coloring success!

Any guidelines for lightening?
You can go as dark as you like in one treatment, but with Naturtint, you can only lighten by one or two shades; more than that can often create unwanted brassy tones.

Should I apply Naturtint to wet or dry hair?
Apply Naturtint over dry unwashed hair, free from any styling products (which can interfere with the way your hair absorbs the color). We recommend washing your hair and waiting 24–48 hours before applying the color to allow your hair's PH and natural oils to normalize.

Can I apply Naturtint to permed hair?
Yes, you can! Just wait 14 days after your perm treatment before applying Naturtint.

Can I color with Naturtint after coloring with henna, semi-permanent or demi- permanent dyes?
Since henna, semi-permanents and demi-permanent dyes attach to the cuticle (the outer layer of hair), Naturtint will not work with these dyes. Naturtint gently lifts the cuticle to allow pigments to enter the hair shaft. If the cuticle has residue from previous henna, semi-permanent or demi-permanents, Naturtint can't enter the hair shaft and give the desired color.
If you have recently colored your hair with henna a semi-permanent or a demi-permanent dye, wait until that color treatment has been completely washed out. Before applying Naturtint, perform a strand test to see if your hair is ready for your new color.

Can I use it for highlights/lowlights?
Since Naturtint is not designed for highlights and lowlights, we cannot guarantee the final result. Keep in mind that Naturtint can only lighten effectively for up to two shades.Consult your professional hairdresser for advice with highlights/lowlights.
NOTE: Do not use any metal (including highlighting foils) with your Naturtint! It can cause discoloration.

Can I use Naturtint on facial hair?
Since scalp and facial hair are different, we recommend that you only use Naturtint for your scalp hair.

Will Naturtint Permanent Hair Color cover stubborn gray hair?
If you have trouble with gray coverage, your hair's cuticle is probably resisting the lift needed to allow the color to absorb. Their suggestion to achieve the best coverage is to choose the natural (N) tones which work best for gray coverage and leave the solution on for a full 40 minutes.
Naturtint suggestion to achieve the best gray coverage is to choose the natural (N) tones and leave the solution on for a full 40 minutes. If you have stubborn grays, you may leave it on just 5 minutes beyond the recommended 40 minutes.

Will my hair get darker if I leave the treatment on for more than 40 minutes?
After 60 minutes, the color process is fully finished. Exposing your hair and scalp to the coloring treatment longer won't add more color. If you have stubborn grays, you may leave it on just 5 minutes beyond the recommended 40 minutes.

How will my tattoo affect the coloring process?
Tattoos contain colorants like paraphenylenediamine (PPD) to speed up the setting process, extend the life of the tattoo, and achieve more attractive colors. Since PPD can cause allergic reactions, applying a permanent hair color that also contains PPD can increase your allergy risk. If you're allergic to PPD, you should not use Naturtint Permanent Hair Color.

Can I use another brand's developer with Naturtint?
Naturtint gives you everything you need for the color treatment in one kit. To prevent reactions, we do not recommend mixing it with another brand's product.

Any tips for avoiding/removing stains?
Since Naturtint is a permanent coloring product, make sure your treatment area can be easily covered and cleaned. Protect surfaces by covering them with a drop cloth or old sheet. Keep a damp cloth nearby to wipe up any drips. If some of the color gets onto a hard floor surface (tile, quartz, marble, ceramic, etc.), you can use a slightly abrasive product with bleach to assist in clean up.
If your skin is prone to staining, place a little bit of Vaseline around your hairline before treating. Afterward, wipe it off with a damp cloth or wash with soap and water.
NOTE: Permanent color will stain soft surfaces like carpets, cloth, or wood! Use extra caution to apply your color treatment in a safe and appropriately protected area.

How often can I use Naturtint hair color?
For best results, wait 2–3 weeks between coloring treatments.

How long will the color last?
Naturtint is a permanent hair color product. How long it lasts will depend on your hair's condition and how you care for it.
Typically, you might see some fading after about 3–5 weeks. But other factors can cause your hair to fade sooner. Those with dry or porous hair might notice color fading faster. If you used a red color, it might fade sooner than neutral colors.
To delay color fading, try these tips:

  • Keep your hair well-conditioned. Deep conditioning treatments improve your hair's condition

  • Wash with a color-safe, PH-balanced shampoo and conditioner

  • Rinse with lukewarm water. (Hot water opens hair cuticles, allowing color to release easier

When can I wash my hair after coloring treatments?
Wash your hair with a PH-balanced shampoo 24–48 hours before and after coloring.

Can I go swimming? Would chlorine affect the color?
Unfortunately, chlorine will affect your color. That's why we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before swimming in a chlorinated pool. Here are a few other tips you can try:

  • Rinse your hair in the shower before and after swimming

  • Deep condition your hair

  • Wear a swimming cap

Can Naturtint be used on top of previously colored hair?
For best results, wait 2–3 weeks between coloring treatments. If you have recently colored your hair with henna a semi-permanent or a demi-permanent dye, wait until that color treatment has been completely washed out. Since henna, semi-permanents and demi-permanent dyes attach to the cuticle (the outer layer of hair), Naturtint will not work if these other types of dye are on your hair.
Before applying Naturtint, perform a strand test to see if your hair is ready for your new color.
